Plan the drive from Asheville

Plan the drive from Asheville

Chimney Rock State Park is southeast of Asheville, 27 miles from downtown. The park has separate access areas, so set your destination to the Chimney Rock entrance and park office at 743 Chimney Rock Park Road, Chimney Rock, NC 28720.

The Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville is another subject to consider when planning a scenic drive. Once you reach the park, use the Chimney Rock access area for the attraction, Ticket Plaza, and the trail options described below.

The park’s other access areas are Rumbling Bald and Eagle Rock. They have their own trails, so don’t assume a visit to one entrance automatically puts you at another; choose the area that matches your plans.

Check park admission and access

Check park admission and access

Admission to the Chimney Rock attraction includes parking, access to all trails, and use of the elevator. Go to the Ticket Plaza to purchase tickets and get information about your visit.

Typical admission ranges are $10–$17 for adults and $5–$8 for youth, with prices varying by season. Ticket requirements and prices can change, so check the official site before you go.

The Chimney Rock entrance and park office are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The entrance and Ticket Plaza close at 5:30 p.m.; park gates close at 7 p.m. Trail closing times differ: Skyline Trail closes at 5 p.m., and Hickory Nut Falls Trail closes by 6 p.m.

The elevator ride from the top parking lot to the Sky Lounge takes about 30 seconds. The parking lot, elevator, Sky Lounge, and bridge are wheelchair accessible, but reaching the top of Chimney Rock still requires climbing 40 stairs.

Elevator service may be interrupted by a power outage; if you require the elevator, confirm that it is operating before your visit.

Pets are allowed on park trails, but dogs other than service animals cannot ride the elevator. If you bring a dog, someone in your party needs to be able to climb the 500 stairs on the Outcroppings Trail.

Choose trails and viewpoints

Choose trails and viewpoints

The park has ten trails: six at the fee-based Chimney Rock access and four free trails at Rumbling Bald, Eagle Rock, and Chimney Rock Village. At Chimney Rock, you can choose between a stair-heavy climb, a waterfall walk, and a shorter route to a high overlook.

Outcroppings Trail

This strenuous, 0.2-mile one-way trail is made primarily of stairs and climbs to the top of Chimney Rock. Lookout points along the way break up the climb, but the route’s stair count makes it a demanding option.

Hickory Nut Falls Trail

The moderate, 0.7-mile one-way trail leads to the base of Hickory Nut Falls, a 404-foot waterfall. It closes by 6 p.m., so leave enough time to complete the walk before then.

Exclamation Point Trail

This 0.3-mile one-way route reaches an overlook at 2,480 feet. It passes the Opera Box and Devil’s Head outlooks, making it a way to include several viewpoints on one short trail.

If your plans focus on Chimney Rock’s summit, account for the stairs even if you use the elevator for part of the visit. The elevator gets you to the Sky Lounge from the top parking lot, but it does not remove the 40-stair climb to the rock’s top.

Allow time for the return journey

Allow time for the return journey

Build your return plan around the trail closing times and the park’s 7 p.m. gate closing time. If Hickory Nut Falls is on your list, its trail closes by 6 p.m.; if you want to walk Skyline Trail, it closes at 5 p.m.

For a day that includes both the summit area and the waterfall, choose your routes before setting out and leave room for the longer trail. The park does not publish a recommended visit duration or a current drive-time estimate from Asheville, so check current conditions and allow time that suits your itinerary.

The Sky Lounge Deli offers snacks, water, and drinks, but its opening status can change. Plan ahead if you expect to need refreshments during your visit.
